When an engineer asks an AI assistant which brands make DC-DC converters, the answer comes from somewhere. Every large language model carries a learned map of the electronics industry — which categories exist, which brands belong to them, which names come up first. That map now sits in front of a growing share of component discovery, and nobody published it.

CategoryRank measures it. Every week we ask a panel of frontier models — across US, European, and Chinese labs — what categories each of ~1,800 tracked electronics brands competes in, and rebuild the map from their consensus. (We track ~1,800 brands weekly; roughly half clear the publication thresholds in any given week — those are the brands you see ranked on the map.) Manufacturers rank against manufacturers, distributors against distributors, aggregators and design-tool vendors against their own peers. Rankings are cross-checked against what manufacturers, distributors, and buyers actually say — inventory, taxonomies, search vocabulary — so AI’s view is always measured against reality, never taken on faith.

We are cartographers, not advocates. The map shows what the models believe — including where they disagree with each other, where their vocabulary diverges from buyers, and where they are simply wrong. The map is public. The substrate behind it is the product.
